Iraq is self-sufficient in 12 agricultural crops, according to Agriculture Minister

As part of the Thirteenth Agricultural Week in Baghdad International Fairground, the Ministry of Agriculture announced that Iraq is self-sufficient in 12 agricultural crops. Mohammad Karim al-Khafaji, Minister of Agriculture, also confirmed that the Prime Minister will consider the emergency cell’s recommendations regarding subsidies and support for the sector.

Iraq is self-sufficient in 12 agricultural crops, according to Agriculture MinisterAt a press conference, Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi indicated that he will take into account the recommendations of the emergency cell, including subsidizing fertilizers and returning the same amounts through the Diwaniyah Order Committee headed by the Minister of Planning, after the approval of the Ministerial Economy and Investment Committee.

Despite the fact that the 2021 budget did not have enough support for the agricultural sector and caused the lifting of support for fodder, Iraq has reached self-sufficiency for 12 agricultural crops as a result of farmers’ efforts. In its commitment to support local producers, the Ministry reiterates its commitment to re-support the agricultural sector to ensure food security.
